The three ships used by Colon where called Carabelas... (La Nina, La Pinta y la Santa Maria) if I remember correctly.

Spanish: carabela
Italian: caravella
French: caravelle
Latin: carabus = small boat
So caraba might be a diminutive form from Spanish and Italian
