Coins from the City of Acqui

Acqui (modern-day Acqui Terme) is a comune in Piedmont, northern Italy, about 35 kilometres south of Alessandria. The city was founded by the Romans as Aquae Statiellae and became well-known for its hot sulphur springs. Acqui was ruled by its bishop from 978, becoming an independent commune in 1135. In 1278, it was annexed by the Marquisate of Montferrat, and later acquired by the Duchy of Savoy. Soon after gaining its independence, Emperor Frederick I (1155-1190) granted Acqui its right of coinage.
