The Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca established the fortified settlement of Akra Leuka (meaning "White Mountain" or "White Point"), in the mid-230s BC. The settlement is generally presumed to have been on the site of modern Alicante.
The city issued silver shekels, ¼-shekels, ½-shekels, 1½-shekels and double shekels.
