Albania is a country in Southern Europe on the Adriatic Sea bordering Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo. It was known as Illyria in antiquity, and in the 15th century led an unsuccessful revolt against, but was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, who ruled the region until it's independence after the First Balkan War in 1912. It effectively became an Italian protectorate in the 1920s, and Italy invaded and annexed it in 1939. The Germans took over after the fall of Mussolini in 1943, until partisan forces with Soviet support liberated the country. It then became part of the Eastern Bloc until 1960 when it's dictator Enver Hoxha left the Bloc. It remained communist until 1998, when a democratic constitution was ratified. As of 2018, Albania has a population of around 2.9 million. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe, and still uses the Albanian Lek. Wikidata: Q222
