Coins from Baden

The country, corresponding to part of the former Duchy of Swabia, was erected as a margraviate within the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century, then divided into three houses until 1503: Baden-Baden, Baden-Hochberg and Baden-Sausenberg. Through a succession of inheritances, all of the so-called fiefs of Baden returned to Christopher I, but for a short time. From 1527, fueled by religious antagonism, a new division was made between the two sons of the deceased margrave, who created two new rival houses: Baden-Baden (Catholic) and Baden-Durlach (Lutheran). The reunification intervened in 1771, by extinction of the branch of Baden-Baden, and the meeting of the two margraviates on the head of Charles I Frederick. In 1803, within the framework of the Napoleonic reforms in Germany, the margraviate became the electorate of Baden, then, in 1806, the Grand Duchy of Baden.
