Coins from the Counts of Batthyány

The Hungarian Batthyány family can trace its roots to the founding of Hungary in 896. The family were first mentioned in documents in 1398 and have had their ancestral seat in Güssing in the Hungarian region of Burgenland - now Austria - since 1522. In the War of Austrian Succession (1744) Károly Batthyány served as a corps commander, defeated the French and forced them back over the Rhine. After the war, Batthyány was raised to princely rank by Maria Theresa – along came the coin minting rights. The most famous member of the family was Lajos Batthyány, who was the first Prime Minister of Hungary in 1848.
