Coins from Benevento

The Duchy of Benevento was founded in 668, and was one of the major Duchies in the lower portion of the Lombard Kingdom (Langobardia Minor). The Duchy remained fairly autonomous from the rest of the Lombard Kingdom, and in 774, after the Lombard Kingdom fell to the Franks, the Duchy of Benevento became the Principality of Benevento, as well as an ally of the Franks. After 839, when a civil war struck and lead to the eventual separation of the Principality of Salerno in 851, Benevento began declining in power. By 897, after multiple Byzantine attacks, Benevento lost most of its power, losing the rest over the next hundred years.
