Coins from the Free imperial City of Besançon

The edict of May 8, 1534 of Emperor Charles V granted the imperial city of Besançon the right to mint gold and silver coins, provided that they bear the name and effigy on the obverse of Charles V and on the reverse the name, the arms of the city and the year. These conditions were scrupulously respected, even after the abdication of the emperor in 1555 and his death in 1558. The municipal coinage of Besançon stopped in 1676, after the definitive conquest of the city by Louis XV.
