Coins from the Margraviate of Brandenburg

The Margraviate of Brandenburg is a former state of the Holy Roman Empire. Founded on June 11, 1157, it plays a major role in the history of Germany. The Golden Bull of 1356 confirms to the margrave the status of prince-elector. Because of this, the Margraviate became better known as the Electorate of Brandenburg. The Hohenzollern dynasty obtained sovereignty in 1415 and moved the residence to Berlin Castle. Under their reign, the margraviate extends territorially. From 1618, they also reign over the Duchy of Prussia in personal union; in 1701, the State of Brandenburg-Prussia was erected into the Kingdom of Prussia.
