Coins from the Marquisate of Saluzzo

The Marquisate of Saluzzo was located between the Alps, the Po River and the Stura di Demonte River, bordering Savoy in the east and France in the west. It was created in 1125, when Manfred I (1125-1175) inherited the fief of Saluzzo from his father, Boniface del Vasto, Marquess of Savona and Western Liguria (1084-1130), who had received it from its suzeran, Ulric Manfred II of Turin. The Marquisate of Saluzzo reached its maximum development under Ludovico I (1416-1475). His son, Ludovico II (1475-1504) continued his father's war against Charles I of Savoy, who temporarily ruled Saluzzo (1487-1490). Ludovico II married Margherita di Foix. Their sons succeeded as marchesses and issued coins in their names: Michele Antonio (1504-1528), Gian Ludovico (1528-1529), Francesco (1529-1537) and Gabriele (1537-1548). At the death of Gabriele, the dynasty went extinct and Saluzzo was annexed to the kingdom of France in 1549. Later, in 1601, through the treaty of Lyon, the Marquisate of Saluzzo was exchanged by the Duchy of Savoy for Bresse, the westernmost part of the duchy. The capital of the marquisate was in Saluzzo. In 1480, Ludovico II established the mint of the marquisate in Carmagnola.
