Cyprus is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey and north of Egypt. It has a total population of 1.15 million, of which 300,000 live in the unrecognised republic of Northern Cyprus that is controlled by Turkey. The remainder of the island has a Greek majority of 850,000 people.
