Coins from the City of Damietta

Damietta is a port at the Mediterranean, located in the Nile Delta, about 200 km north of Cairo. During the Fifth Crusade in 1217, Damietta was the focus of the attack due to its strategic importance for controlling the Nile. The port was besieged and occupied by Frisian crusaders in 1219, helped by Francis of Assisi, who peaceably negotiated with the Muslim ruler. The city was taken over by John of Brienne, King of Jerusalem (1210-1225), but soon lost to the Muslims in 1221. The billon deniers of Damietta were issued by John of Brienne during his short occupation of the city.
