Coins from the Abbey of Essen

Essen Abbey was a convent of canonesses founded around 845 by Saint Altfrid in Lotharingia. It became an imperial abbey of the Holy Empire and, in 1512, an ecclesiastical principality. The abbey was secularized in 1803 and its territory fell to the Kingdom of Prussia.
