Comments

On June 11, 1703, Anne-Louise-Bénédicte de Bourbon, Duchesse du Maine, had the whim to create an order known as the "Order of the Honey Bee", a parody of the great orders of chivalry.
The bee was its symbol, accompanied by the motto: "Piccola si, ma fa pur gravi le ferite" ("She's small, but makes serious wounds"). This "ingenious joke", which the duchess adopted as her motto at her wedding, gave her the idea for the creation of the order. Its source is Tasso's Aminte. The duchess's small stature made her comparable to a honey fly (i.e. a bee), as did her fiery temper.
The order was open to both men and women, some forty in number.
