Comments

Tamil Eelam is a proposed independent nation that ethnic Tamils attempted to create in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. After some 25 years of fighting they were finally defeated by the Sri Lankan Army in 2009. The obverse of this unofficial 500 Rupee coin of Tamil Eelam features the head of a tiger. The tiger is the emblem of the Tamil Eelam and is derived from the emblem of the medieval Chola Empire that once controlled Sri Lanka and southern India. The military wing of Tamil Eelam was called the Tamil Tigers. The reverse features a standing tiger and the inscription in Tamil "freedom and equality". The 40mm silver-plated proof coin has a mintage of only 150 pieces.
