On the bank in the foreground, the personification of Hope stands half to the right in a long, breastless robe and rests with her right shoulder on a ship's anchor on the ground, which she grasps with her left. She looks up to the left at heavenly rays shining through a group of clouds and holds out her right hand with an open hand. At the top, there is an arched scroll with the motto.

Lettering: DEVS ‣ SPES ‣ NOSTRA ‣ EST ‣

Translation: God is our hope.

Comments

The view of the city on the obverse is likely to have been inspired by a detailed drawing made around 1640 by the Schaffhausen goldsmith and later mint master Hans Heinrich Ammann and engraved in copper by the painter and etcher Konrad Mayer.

According to its style, this medal was probably created around the middle of the 17th century.
