Louis I reigned over the Kingdom of Holland (name taken by the Netherlands during the reign of Napoleon I) from June 5, 1806 to July 1, 1810. He is the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and the father of Napoleon III. Torn between his duty as a Dutch king and his obligations as a French prince, his relations with Napoleon were strained to the point of being forced to abdicate in 1810, leading to the annexation of the Kingdom of Holland to the French Empire. On the banknote a map of the period Kingdom of Holland and Louis Bonaparte from a portrait painted by Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) in 1809.
