The sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the Brabant town of Zundert. His father is a minister at the Reformed Church. At the age of 16 Vincent leaves for The Hague to work for the Hague branch of the French art and print trade Goupil & Cie. His uncle is a co-partner of the company. During this period Vincent starts writing letters to his brother Theo. He continues to do that all his life.
Van Gogh is the epitome of the misunderstood artist. Misunderstood and lonely during his life and only successful after his death. Today millions of people view Van Gogh's paintings every year, especially the Sunflowers. The series of paintings of sunflowers become one of his most famous works. One of these paintings is auctioned in London in 1987. It is sold to the owner of a Japanese insurance company. He paid nearly $40 million for it!
From the Yellow House, Van Gogh's studio in Arles, southern France, the works spread all over the world. This makes it almost impossible to hang the Sunflowers together and most people only see one or two Sunflowers in their life. One hangs in the National Gallery in London, one in the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, one in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, one in the Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Museum of Art in Tokyo, and one in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam .
