Two years after the end of the conflict, in 1920, with the Royal Decree n° 1241 of 29 July of the same year, the COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL OF THE ITALIAN-AUSTRIAN WAR was established. The decoration was granted to soldiers, militarized persons, assimilated persons and personnel of the auxiliary corps and departments, who had served for at least four months in a war zone and in the jurisdictional area of the Italian Armies engaged at the front.

This medal was struck in more than 1,800,000  from 1920 until 1923.

The original decoration has a green, white and red ribbon, and one band for each year of the war.
