Comments

Joseph Howe was an influential figure in Nova Scotia for many years. He began his career as a journalist, founding the self-published Novascotian newspaper at the age of 23, and when that paper attacked corrupt politicians he was charged with seditious libel. When Howe was brought to court, he managed to convince the jury that exposing corruption was not a criminal offense, and helped create the tradition of a free press in Canada. Later in life, he was elected to public office and helped make Nova Scotia the first British colony to achieve "responsible government" (a precursor to self-government). He is remembered as one of the greatest Nova Scotians for his efforts to bring transparency and good government to that province.
