Rembert Dodoens était un botaniste et médecin flamand né en 1517 à Malines et mort en 1585 à Leyde.
Il est l’auteur d’un célèbre ouvrage sur les plantes médicinales, une édition en flamand, sous le titre Cruydeboeck, qui paraît en 1554 et fût traduite en français trois en plus tard par Charles de l’Ecluse sous le titre Histoire des plantes.
En 1846, Adolphe-Christian Jouvenel grava et édita une collection de 25 médailles en bronze en module de 45 mm représentant les portraits "Des grands hommes de la Belgique". Chacune de ces réalisation était vendue à l'époque au prix de 4 Francs belge.
Des reproductions en jetons (comme celui décrit ici) de chacune de ces médailles furent également gravées pour, selon le prospectus de l'époque, mettre cette publication à la portée de tout le monde avec un prix de vente plus démocratique de 50 centimes.
