Coins from the Free City of Riga

CoinsLivonia › Free city of Riga

In 1561, due to the Livonian Order's demise as a result of the Livonian War (1558-1583), Riga gained the status of Free City. While many places around Riga were at war, the City was self-sufficient enough that it held its "Free City" status for twenty year until, in 1581, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth took Riga over.
