Coins from the Abbey of Fulda

Located near Kassel in Germany, Fulda Abbey was founded in 747 by Sturm, a disciple of Saint Boniface. The abbey and the congregation obtained in 1019 from the Emperor Henry II the right to mint coins; Fulda is mentioned for the first time as a "city" (Civitas) in 1114. The abbey was erected as a lordship by Emperor Frederick II in 1220. Fulda Abbey was raised to the rank of bishopric by Pope Benedict XIV October 5, 1752.
