Banknotes from Guinea

Guinea is a country in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea bordering Sierra Leone, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Ivory Coast and Liberia. It was inhabited by African states such as Futa Jallon and the Songhai Empire until French colonisation in the late 19th century during the Scramble for Africa, with local leaders subjugated in 1898. It became part of French West Africa, and remained under French colonial rule with it's regional administrative capital of Conakry, until it's independence in 1960 from France along with many other Francophone African states. Ahmed Sekou Touré became an effective dictator of a one party state after independence until his 1984 death, after which Lansana Conté succeeded him; following another succession crisis in 2008-10, a democracy was finally established in Guinea. As of 2018, it has a population of about 12 million, and currently uses the Guinean Franc.
