Coins from the Herulian Kingdom

The Heruli, originally from Scandinavia, were a south-moving tribe who raided many towns within the Roman Empire. After the death of Attila the Hun (434-453), the Heruli established their own kingdom in middle Danube, centred around modern-day Slovakia. In 476, with the help of the Heruli and a few other tribes, Odovacar (476-493) established the Kingdom of Italy, and as a result, the Heruli received a large portion of land within Italy. Even so, Odovacar's Kingdom and the Ostrogoths were not on good terms, and in 493, the Ostrogothic king killed Odovacar. After that, Herulian power in Italy declined until 508, when the Lombards destroyed their kingdom in middle Danube. With their kingdom destroyed, the Heruli dispersed—some went to the Lombards, some to the Gepids, some to the Balkans, and some back to Scandinavia. Over the next century, they faded from history.
