Coins from the Holy Roman Empire

The Holy Roman Empire was a state in Western Europe that existed from 962 (coronation of Otto I) to 1806 (abdication of Francis II). Resulting from the decomposition of the Carolingian Empire, this state played an important role in the history of Europe in the Middle Ages and during modern times. Its disappearance led to the establishment of the Austrian Empire which became the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867, and later the German Empire from 1871. The monetary history of the Holy Roman Empire therefore extends over more than a millennium, with significant evolutions from gold and silver coins to copper and bronze coins over the centuries. Money played a crucial role in the economic and political development of the Empire, reflecting changes in power relations. Indeed, very quickly many princes, for example the Margraves of Brandenburg at the origin of the House of Prussia, the Dukes of Saxony, the Dukes of Bavaria, the various archbishops, acquire a great autonomy which leads to a considerable fragmentation of power: several hundred entities of very different sizes gradually become sovereign. The different dynasties that ruled the Empire thus issued their own coins as a means of communication to mark their power and legitimacy.
