Coins from the Kingdom of Cyprus

"The Crusaders founded the Kingdom of Cyprus during the Third Crusade, in 1192, when Richard I of England conquered Cyprus on the way to the Holy Land. The island was given to the displaced King of Jerusalem Guy of Lusignan, whose family ruled it until 1489, when its last queen sold it to Venice. It comprised not only the island of Cyprus, but also had a foothold on the Anatolian mainland: Antalya between 1361 and 1373, and Corycus between 1361 and 1448. Guy de Lusignan, the founder of the dynasty, struck electrum scyphate bezants in Byzantine style, with Christ on the reverse. He also minted copper coins and billon deniers valued at 1/48 of a bezant. This monetary system was adjusted by Henry II (1285-1306), who introduced the gros with a high silver content (c. 92%), valued at half of a bezant. The last bezants were minted by Hugh III (1267-1284) and the weight-standard fluctuated throughout the following issues, but remained relatively high, with the last silver issues of Catherine Cornaro (1473-1489) containing 88-89% silver."
