Coins from the Vandal Kingdom

In 426, the Vandals crossed from Spain to Africa, only to form their own kingdom in 435 when they acquired the city of Hippo Regius as a result of a siege. In 439, they laid siege to Carthage, taking the city from the Romans and making it their new capital. While the Vandal Kingdom thrived most under their first king, Genseric (435-477), their kingdom only started to fall under Gelimer (530-534), when the Byzantines declared war on the Vandals to restore the previous king, who Gelimer had deposed and captured. In 533, the former king was executed under Gelimer's orders. The next year, after losing a few wars and family members, Gelimer surrendered, accepting an offer to live the rest of his life in a vast estate. With the Vandal Kingdom dismantled, many Vandals were expelled, and the best warriors were shipped to Constantinople to be assimilated into the imperial army.
