Martinique is an island in the Lesser Antilles in the Eastern Caribbean that was first settled by French explorers in 1635. It was frequently occupied by the British during their various wars against France, in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1815 slave trading was abolished, but slavery itself not until 1848. In 1897 the first coins in values of 50 centimes and 1 Franc in copper-nickel were issued for Martinique. During WWII the island was under Vichy until towards the end of the war.
