Banknotes from Mauritius

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of Africa. The country consists of the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, 560 kilometers (350 mi) east of Mauritius, and the outer smaller islands of Agaléga and St. Brandon. The country has an area of 2,040 km² (790 square miles) and the capital and largest city is Port Louis. Mauritius was formerly a Dutch colony (1638-1710), a French colony (1715–1810), and became a British colony in 1810 and remained so until 12 March 1968, when it attained independence. The people of Mauritius are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual, estimated at about 1,2 million in 2015. Mauritius is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the largest religion and it uses English as its main language. The currency is the Rupee that is divided into 100 Cents. The coins depict the British Monarch up to 1978 and on special issue coins up to 1982.
