The Paris Mint, responsible for striking royal coins, has had various locations over the centuries. The oldest known workshop was situated at the current site of the courthouse on the Ile de la Cité. It was later moved to the Marais district, and then to the church of Saint-Jacques de la Boucherie district.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries, the main workshop was established for four centuries in the Saint-Germain de l'Auxerrois district, on the present-day "rue de la Monnaie". In 1609, it was transferred to the Louvre Palace due to the construction of the Pont-Neuf. Other production locations emerged during this time: in 1547, Henry II established a second workshop called "La Monnaie de Nesle" located in the tower of Nesle, producing billon coins, an alloy of silver and copper to prevent counterfeiting. In 1551, a third workshop was established on the Ile de la Cité, known as the "Maison des Étuves" or the "Moulin". This workshop was mechanized with equipment imported from Germany, including the balance, the coining press, and the rolling mill.

In 1775, the "Administration des monnaies et médailles" centralized all production in the heart of Paris, on the "Quai de Conti", left bank of the Seine, in a new building that remains the last active factory in the city of Paris. Faced with the increasing volume of coins to be minted, a new industrial facility was built in 1973 in Pessac, near Bordeaux, to handle all phases of regular coins production. In Paris, the Monnaie de Paris continues to produce collectible coins in precious metals, medals, official decorations, and art objects.
