The lordship of Franquemont was established as a sovereign barony of the Empire on November 12, 1538 and Nicolas de Gilley then acted sovereignly, granting himself the royal right to mint money in his name. He immediately began making copies of the coins of neighboring territories. Its coins, generally of low quality, were quickly criticized, but they generally succeeded in circulating among the mass of coins in Franche-Comté.
