Comments

Released jointly by the RAM and QANTAS in a Box Set of eleven coins is this NCLT Aluminium-bronze coloured $1 coin that commemorates 100 Years of the Australian Airline QANTAS. Nine other coins in the set are also the usual Aluminium-bronze however one of the coins is larger than normal and is made from Copper. The coin was issued in a coincard inside a folding red box.

Qantas selected the Boeing 707 as its first jet aircraft in 1956 and became the first non-US airline to take delivery of the 707 in 1958. Boeing developed a special 707-138 version with a shorter fuselage exclusively for Qantas and in July 1959 Qantas operated the first ever trans-Pacific jet service between Sydney and San Francisco.

Qantas ordered the updated 707-338, which made the first non-stop trans-Pacific flight by a commercial aircraft on its delivery flight in March 1965. New Qantas jet services opened up throughout the 1960s including The exotic Fiesta Route to London via Mexico and Bermuda. The last Qantas Boeing 707 retired in 1979.
