The obverse features an engraving of Her Majesty the Queen adapted from a photograph by Anthony Buckley taken in 1960. The Queen is pictured wearing the Alexandra Kokoshnik tiara, George VI festoon necklace, and Queen Mary cluster earrings.

The reverse features flora and fauna of New Zealand. Representing the former is the kowhai, a flowering tree belonging to the legume family. As for the latter, the tui, a small bird of the Australasian honeyeater family, and one of two only found in New Zealand.
