La Tehuana refers to a woman from the Tehuantepec isthmus in Oaxaca, Mexico. This engraving is based on a photo of María Estela Ruíz Velázquez (~1912 – April 2004) who won a 1936 contest to be featured on the $10 note. She is wearing one of the traditional costumes of the region which is meant to be evocative of a flower.

The obverse of this note is distinguished from P#47 by the removal of "No" from above the serial numbers.
