Themes of this banknote

(1) Artur da Silva Bernardes (Viçosa, 1875 - Rio de Janeiro, 1955) was a Brazilian lawyer and politician, President of Minas Gerais, 1918 to 1922 and 12th President of Brazil between November 15, 1922 and November 15, 1926. His followers were called "bernardistas". Bernardes won the presidential elections of March 1, 1922. obtaining 466,877 votes against 317,714 votes given to Nilo Peçanha, in an election that divided the country: Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro supported Nilo Peçanha and the other states supported the Bernardes candidacy.
Before the election, Bernardes had to face the rumorous case of "cartas falsas" (false letters) attributed to him and which denigrated the ex-president Hermes da Fonseca. Its vice-president was Estácio Coimbra who replaced Urbano Santos, elected vice-president, also on March 1, 1922, died on May 7, 1922, before taking office. The discontent with the victory of Bernardes and the government of his predecessor, Epitácio Pessoa, were some of the causes of the so-called Revolta dos 18 do Forte de Copacabana, (18 of the Copacabana Fort revolt) the movement's first action lieutenant. Bernardes had to face the Coluna Prestes (Prestes Column), a tenentist movement that traveled the country preaching changes political and social and has never been defeated by the government.
