Miguel Jerónimo Larreynaga y Balmaceda (29 Sept 1772 – 28 Apr 1847) helped to draft the Act of Independence of Central America, formally separating the Captaincy General of Guatemala (the modern states of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and parts of southern Mexico) from the Kingdom of Spain.

Francisco Hernández de Córdoba (~1475 – 1526) was a conquistador who served under Hernán Cortés in the new world. He led the early colonization efforts in Nicaragua, founding cities and subjugating the native population. He was beheaded in León (a city he founded) in 1526 for trying to establish himself as governor of the new territories.
