When the wars against the Song dynasty were fully enganged, there were no addition silver reserves to back the Zhongtong banknotes. As a result, these Zhiyuan banknotes were issued to overcome the depreciation at an exchange rate of 5 Zhongtong to 1 Zhiyuan (although both were still useable at this time).
