Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (8 May 1753–30 July 1811) was a Catholic priest and the first leader of the Mexican Independence movement. He was a tireless champion of the poor and, in 1810, gave the Cry of Dolores in his morning mass, causing his parish to rise up in arms. In 1811 he, along with other insurgent leaders, were betrayed, captured, executed, and beheaded by the colonial authorities.
