Juan Rafael Mora Porras was President of Costa Rica from 1849 to 1859. He was declared National Hero and Liberator in 2010.
Juan Santamaría Rodríguez was a drummer in the Costa Rican army who was officially recognized as a National Hero for his actions in the 1856 Second Battle of Rivas during the Filibuster War. On the 35th anniversary of his death, a monument with his statue was erected in his hometown of Alajuela.
