Coins from New Guinea

New Guinea refers to an Oceanic colonial possession of Britain, referred to as Papua, which was first colonised in the 1890s. The territory was enlarged following Germany's defeat in the Great War by the subsequent addition of the neighbouring colony of German New Guinea to the territory, both of whom were mandated to Australia by the League of Nations in 1919. Japanese troops invaded it in 1942, and bitter guerilla fighting ensued on the island until mid-1943. After WWII, the two territories were united in an administrative unit called 'Papua and New Guinea' in 1946, and the country of Papua New Guinea became an independent nation formally in 1975.
