New Guinea coins
New Guinea was an Oceanic colonial possession of Britain which was first colonised in the 1880s and 1890s. The territory was enlarged following Germany's defeat in the Great War, and the subsequent annexation of neighbouring German New Guinea into the territory, which was mandated to Australia in 1919. Japanese troops invaded in 1942, and bitter guerilla fighting ensued until the were driven back in mid 1943. Australia's mandate ended in the 1950s, and New Guinea became an independent nation formally in 1975.
