Coins from the Ostrogothic Kingdom

In 493, Theoderic (493-526) and the ruling King, Odovacar (476-493), came to an agreement to split Italy between the two of them; however, Theoderic murdered Odovacar in a surprise attack, taking Italy for his own and starting the Ostrogothic Kingdom. Under Theoderic, laws remained constant and many foreign alliances were made, but near his death, many of those alliances began to fall apart, leaving an in-danger kingdom in the hands of Theoderic's young grandson, Athalaric (526-534). With Athalaric being so young, his mother/Theoderic's daughter, Amalasuntha, ruled as queen regent, later ruling independently from 534 to 535 after Athalaric's death. While Amalasuntha established strong diplomatic relations with Byzantine emperor Justinian I (527-565), the Ostrogoths did not like being ruled by a Roman-educated woman. She was deposed and captured by her cousin in 535, and killed the same year. Furious at the murder, Justinian I declared war on the Ostrogoths. While the next rulers tried to re-establish relations, Justinian I did not stop until 554, when he destroyed the kingdom, taking the former Ostrogothic territories as Byzantine ones.
