Pope John Paul II visiting San Marino on 5 May 1983

Obverse

Plain edge with wording in Italian all around separated by 2 six pointed stars/flowers on either side. Inside the ring of writing is the official emblem of the Republic placed on a sweeping view of the Towers of San Marino.

Reverse

Plain edge with two arches of lettering wording in Italian starting bottom left going to bottom right and In the middle the venerable figure of St. Peter in an act of blessing. This is the reproduction of the bronze statue that is St. Peter housed at the Vatican Basilica. Behind the figure is reproduced the same tapestry that is located in the Basilica.

Bottom left shows the mint number out of 10 000.

Bottom right shows the silver content (800) inside an oval.

In the exergue, under the feet of the saint, the signature of the author of the coin.

Biography of the author of the sketches:

Pietro Giampaoli was born in Buia, Udine, in 1898 was for 25 years the head of the Italian Mint engraver and created in that capacity countless coins among which is worth remembering the first silver 500 lire. From 1950 to 1963 he made all the Vatican coins, including qualle of the Vacant See and of Vatican II. He worked on the medals of the Popes Paul VI and John XXII. He made coins for Tuchia, Tunisia, Israel, Oman and Malta. For the Republic of San Marino in 1971 shaped the medals dedicated to G.B. Morgagni and in 1979 the series of coins.
