The Royal Australian Mint in conjunction with some Australian Newspapers released this NCLT coin as part of a 14 coin series called "Legends of the Anzacs" in April 2017.
To get a coin you had to obtain a token from the newspaper and redeem it at a cost of $3.00. Different tokens were published each day for 2 weeks (hence 14 coins). The coins are commemorating various service medals awarded to Australian Military personnel from the Boer war to the Afghanistan war.
Ten of the 14 coins released in the series are 20 cent coins and four of them are 25 cent coins. They were issued in a collector coin card.
This particular 20 cent coin refers to the Nursing Service Cross medal which is awarded to members of the Australian Defence Force who demonstrate outstanding devotion and competence in the performance of nursing duties, or perform an act of exceptional dedication. Introduced in 1989 the Nursing Service Cross is four-stepped silver cross inlaid with red transparent enamel. It is accompanied with a ribbon of white for purity, gold to represent the colour of sand and a red vertical stripe.
