Comments

In 1970, the United States Mint in Denver manufactured 55,843,368 blank planchets to be used to the minting of this coin.

This series has several variants (narrow/wide dates, thick/thin dates, open/closed 8s), some of which are described below.

1970

1975

1977
Thin date variety has wider space between numbers and coin's rim, space between sideburns and collar, lower mint mark with larger space between "M" and "o," different hair waves on back, knot on neckerchief, and ornamentation in the neck with "heart-shape" trim (opposite to the "M-shaped" ones in the normal issue).

1978
Open "8" variety has no knot on neckerchief and a higher mint mark.

1979
Thick date variety has less detail on hair at back and on the neck ornaments, wrinkles on neckerchief are fused in a single one near halfway to the back, while on the thin date they stay as two until the very tip.
