The badge of the Prince of Wales, a plume of three ostrich feathers enfiling a coronet of crosses pattées and fleurs de lis, dividing motto with legend above and denomination below.

Translation: I serve

Engraver: Christopher Ironside

Christopher Ironside FSIA 1970, OBE 1971, FRBS 1977 was an English painter and coin designer, particularly known for the reverse sides of the new British coins issued on decimalisation in 1971.

Royal Mint, Llantrisant, United Kingdom (1968-date)

In 1982, 11 years after Decimalisation Day on 15th February 1971, the word 'NEW' was removed from the denomination on the reverse, so the legend now reads 'TWO PENCE'.

This type was not struck for circulation and can only be found in Royal Mint annual Brilliant Uncirculated & Proof sets.

C2A - Error reverse a number of 2 pence coins were struck in 1983 with the incorrect reverse die (NEW PENCE) as opposed to TWO PENCE. Reports suggest that the error coins or 'mules' were contained in some Brilliant Uncirculated sets packed by the Royal Mint for Heinz and Martini issued in 1983. See seperate listing.
