Comments

This is the Silver Proof (.999) version of the standard definitive Platypus Reverse 20 cent coin used in everyday circulation in Australia. The Ian Rank-Broadley fourth effigy Obverse is the third effigy to be used on this iconic 20 cent coin.

This silver version of the 20 Cent Platypus coin was first released in the 1998 Masterpieces in Silver 9 coin set with 7 other 20 cent sized coins commemorating various florins issued between 1910 & 1954 and the 1995 United Nations 20 cent commemorative.

From 2004, it was released as part of the annual Fine Silver Proof Year Set. The Royal Australian Mint began releasing Fine Silver Year Sets in 2003 and have continued to do so since then. (The 2003 Fine Silver Set used the Year of the Volunteers reverse 20 cent coin) The Platypus standard reverse 20 cent coin (with IRB obverse) was included in the Fine Silver Proof Year of 2004 and then all of the sets from 2010 onwards.

The Fine Silver Proof Set normally includes a 5 cent, 10 cent, 50 cent, $1 and $2 coin as well as this 20 cent coin. The sets are issued in a presentation case, initially made from wood but recently made from plastic or imitation wood.

The standard Copper-nickel version of the 20 cent coin which this Silver coin is based on was introduced into circulation in Australia in 1966 to replace the old £sd Florin.
