The Battle of Boyacá, won on August 7, 1819 by the republican troops of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander over royalist troops loyal to the Spanish crown, consecrated the independence of Gran Colombia, covering Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and part of present-day Peru and Bolivia. It took place in the Andes at Puente de Boyacá (Boyacá Bridge), opening the way to Bogotá, 150 km to the south (Source: www.wikipedia.org).
