Second laureate portrait ('Bun Head') of Queen Victoria facing left, legend around.

Lettering: VICTORIA D. G. BRITT. REG. F. D.

Translation: Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of all the Britains Defender of the Faith

Engraver: Leonard Charles Wyon

Leonard Charles Wyon was a British engraver of the Victorian era most notable for his work on the gold and silver coinage struck for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 and the bronze coinage of 1860 with the second head portrait, in use from 1860 to 1894.

Crowned denomination above date, laurel wreath surrounding.

The original weight of these pieces was one thirtieth ounce avoirdupois, making them the lightest bronze issues in the British series. Struck for use in Malta, where they corresponded in value with the old Maltese grano, third-farthings were never legal tender in the United Kingdom.
