This coin was issued by the Perth Mint as part of a two coin Fine Silver (.999) set that was emulating the original Holey Dollar and Dump. This 25 cent face value coin is the centre part of the two coin set. The outer part or ring has a face value of $1 and together they make up a $1.25 combined coin.
The Holey Dollar and Dump were introduced by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1813. Due to a shortage of coins he punched out the centre of Spanish silver eight reale coins ("pieces of eight") to make two coins.
